Dr. Absinthe / Johannes (Joh) von Engelhardt
Setting
Originally, he's from a story I've been working on set in an alternative post-post-apocalyptic future, where society collapsed and now starting to rebuild. It's a little solarpunk, a little cyberpunk, and a substantial amount of whimsy. In this world, people can be magically bound to different elements and physical phenomena.
I've played Dr. Absinthe in a cyberpunk red game and once in a normal DnD setting... They're very fun to shove into different settings. No matter what the setting is, Dr. Absinthe is always unhinged, a doctor of some sort, and has daddy issues.
Appearance
Skelly Form: Their bones are a light green and will glow in dim light or when using his powers. His eye sockets also have a glowing light in them.
Human Form: He has slightly wavy brown hair, light facial hair (usually some form of pencil mustache), and green eyes.
Their fashion varies by time and setting, but it's usually fancy or dramatic.
Personality
They have a bit of a Machiavellian flair, being very patient and cunning when it comes to accomplishing their goals. At the same time, he easily falls into overindulgence. He does not make friends easily, but when they do he's fiercely loyal, though his selfish tendencies often strain his relationships. Basically, they're a man of extremes. He's not one to half ass things. He also tends to have an addictive personality which led him to have some issues with drug use for a while.
Relationships
Heinrich von Engelhardt - Father
A stoic businessman who Johannes felt he could never really please. They do not like the fact that they inherited much of their father's personality...
Else Johanna von Engelhardt - Mother
Kind woman who died when Johannes was a teenager. He remembers her fondly, but doesn't mention her much.
Geneviève Delacroix - Fiancé
Worked in the medical field in Johannes's father's company. Saw the best in Johannes but also didn't put up with his nonsense. Basically the only thing keeping him sane.
Backstory
Johannes was supposed to follow in his father's footsteps, running the business conglomerate that covered medical and technical fields. In this sense, their father was rather progressive, but their relationship soured amid Johannes's transition and general disinterest in inheriting the family business. Still, he ended up working under his father on emerging medical technologies. For a while their relationship seemed to be improving, especially after Heinrich saw that Johannes did genuinely care for Geneviève. However, as time went on, it became clear that he never really accepted Johannes for who he was, and the desire to create a lasting legacy began to outweigh any remaining familial love...
His father had been secretly working on a way to generate highly efficient, near limitless power. In this process, he discovered the magic of binding, and had carefully developed a pure uranium spike. All that was left was to test it... Failure would lead to death, but success would lead to true legacy. With twisted logic, he determined to test his methods on Johannes. It worked, but their father was left dead in the heat of betrayal, pain, and new abilities. With Geneviève's help, he found he could control the new powers and keep up the appearance of normalcy.
After this, a whole new world opened up to them as other bound revealed themselves to Johannes in an attempt to influence him according to their purposes. Of particular note was an ancient creature wrapped in strips of cloth named Ameny... A mummy. They saw that Johannes could be a valuable asset in discovering further uses and information about their powers, and so gladly taught him much of what they knew. Geneviève could see that this creature was dangerous and cruel, but Johannes could only see the wealth of new knowledge open to him.
As they learned more about the source of their powers, he became convinced that the viral, parasitic nature of the powers would eventually overrun the earth. It would be very slow, but eventually the immortal bound would overrun the mortal. His solution? Discover a way to end the bound. Ameny was pleased with this plan, as they intended to take the discovered method for themselves to further solidify power. Geneviève didn't necessarily disagree with her fiance's analysis of the situation, but she could see he was going down a very dark path. After her inevitable death, Dr. Absinthe grew more callous to the world and utilitarian in their methods, stopping at nothing to achieve his goal.
